Preparing your puppy for their first groom

The first groom shapes how your dog feels about grooming for the rest of their life. A few simple steps at home can make all the difference.

Start at home before the first professional appointment
Spend five minutes a day touching your puppy's paws, ears, and mouth. Get them comfortable with being handled in these areas before a stranger does it. Puppies that have been desensitized at home react far more calmly to professional grooming.
Introduce equipment sounds
Run a hair dryer near your puppy — not on them, just nearby — so the sound becomes familiar. Let them sniff a brush or comb. The less novel the equipment sounds, the calmer the first appointment will be.
Choose the right first service
For a first appointment, a puppy intro groom is better than a full groom with a haircut. A simple bath, blow-dry, nail trim, and ear cleaning gets the puppy comfortable with the process without adding the complexity of scissoring.
Time it right
A tired puppy is a calmer puppy. Schedule the first appointment after a morning walk or play session, not right after they wake up full of energy.
Don't hover outside the van
Your anxiety transfers to your dog. Hand them over calmly and go inside. Puppies that can smell and hear their owner outside the van may be more distressed, not less.
After the appointment
Lots of praise and treats after the first appointment build the positive association. Avoid making the departure feel like an ordeal — keep goodbyes brief and matter-of-fact.
