Goldendoodles, labradoodles, and their relatives are gorgeous — and high-maintenance. Here's everything you need to know about keeping their coats healthy.

Goldendoodles, labradoodles, and their relatives are gorgeous — and high-maintenance. Here's everything you need to know about keeping their coats healthy.

Why doodle coats mat so easily

Doodle coats range from loosely wavy to tightly curled depending on the generation and breeding. What all of them share: hair that grows continuously (no seasonal shedding) and a tendency to mat close to the skin where owners can't see it forming. The most common mat locations are behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits, in the groin, and around the base of the tail.

How often to groom a doodle

Every 6–8 weeks is the standard. Many doodle owners book every 6 weeks to stay ahead of mat formation. Going longer than 8–10 weeks almost always results in some matting that requires extra work — or a shorter cut than you wanted.

Between appointments: brushing at home

Daily brushing isn't realistic for most owners, but 3–4 times per week makes a real difference. Use a slicker brush for the outer coat and a metal comb to check all the way to the skin. If the comb catches anywhere, there's early matting that needs to be worked out before it tightens.

Summer vs. winter length

In North Charlotte's mild winters, many doodle owners prefer a shorter cut (1–2 inches) from May through September. Shorter coats are cooler, mat less readily, and dry faster after outdoor activity near Lake Norman. A slightly longer cut in winter is both warmer and generally what owners prefer for photos.

The shave-down decision

If a doodle is too matted to brush out, a shave-down is the kindest option. It's not a failure — it happens to dogs with attentive owners when life gets busy. A good groomer will tell you honestly when brushing out is no longer humane and what your options are.
